CSCI E-8 - Web GIS: Technologies and Applications

Web GIS, as the combination of the web and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), is a new and promising field. It has unlocked the power of GIS, and put online maps and geospatial intelligence in the offices of millions and the hands of billions. This course aims to provide students with the essential web GIS knowledge needed for managing web GIS projects, teach students the latest web GIS technologies needed for building modern web GIS apps, and inspire students with real world application case studies.

Introduction to GIS

This course introduces the concepts and components of a geographic information system (GIS). It also teaches the essential skills of operating a functional GIS through the use of ArcGIS software package. By completing this course, students will understand the operational processes of spatial data acquisition, editing and QA/QC, metadata development, geodatabase design, spatial query and display, spatial analysis and modeling, preliminary GIS application development, cartographic mapping and dynamic visualization, and GIS implementation basics.

This course introduces the concepts and components of a geographic information system (GIS). It also teaches the essential skills of spatial data management, analysis, and visualization through the use of the ArcGIS software package. Upon completion of this course, students understand the fundamental concepts of a GIS including spatial data models, spatial analysis, and cartographic principles.

Geographic Communication Today - ISMT E-155 (24313)

This course teaches the fundamental geographic, technological, and cartographic concepts required to produce informative, meaningful maps that illustrate geographic phenomena. By using a combination of Internet and desktop geographic information softwares, students perform geocoding, thematic mapping, web map mashing, and spatial analysis. Maps are generated from publicly available published and crowd-sourced data sets, and individual geographic data sets created from scratch.

Web GIS has revealed its immense value and applicability to government, business, scientific research, and our daily life. This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of web GIS, teach students state-of-the-art skills including ArcGIS Online Cloud GIS, ArcGIS for Server, ArcGIS Online web app templates, ArcGIS Web AppBuilder, ArcGIS API for JavaScript, HTML5, mobile GIS, and 3-D web scenes, and inspire students with real world web GIS application case studies. Access to Harvard ArcGIS server and other ArcGIS software is provided.
