Tufts University, School of Arts & Sciences: Science, Technology, and Society

Description

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program at Tufts University seeks a Part-Time Lecturer to teach one Geography/STS course in Spring 2020. The course should include an introduction to GIS and cartography, but should also teach broader principles in the field of human geography, including space and place, scale, territory, community, and the built environment. The course syllabus should feature social science readings about the role of technology in mediating people’s relationship to space and should engage with theoretical work on mapping from the STS and/or critical GIS literature. Connections with other fields such as design and planning, urban sociology, American studies, and ethnic studies are welcome. The course will be open to students from across the university with no prerequisites. In addition to teaching this course, there will be opportunities to participate in other STS programming at Tufts, such as the STS Lunch Seminar and Reading Labs.

The Science, Technology and Society program at Tufts has more than 40 faculty affiliates across the university, from departments such as anthropology, history, mathematics, computer science, political science, philosophy, urban and environmental policy and planning, and many more. The program offers courses that draw on techniques and texts from the humanities and social sciences to study science and technology in their social context as well as courses that teach critically engaged modeling practices. STS offers a major and a minor for undergraduates.
