Vision Inspired Geo-visualization

Date:

Thursday, November 8, 2018, 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Location:

64 Sidney St. Suite 170, Cambridge, MA

Presentation by Dr. Arzu Çöltekin, hosted by The Visual Attention Lab.

Abstract:  In this talk, Dr. Coltekin will draw links between vision and visualization, taking two perspectives based on the following overarching questions: 1) How can we better understand the complexity of visuospatial information displays based on (some of) what we understand in vision literature, and, 2) How can we implement vision inspired solutions to create highly functional, memorable and desirable visuospatial displays?  After a brief overview, the talk will feature some projects on discriminability of colors, illusions in geographic visualizations, and effects of levels of realism/detail on route learning and visual search.

Speaker Bio:  Dr. Arzu Çöltekin is a Research Group Leader and a Senior Lecturer at the Geographic Information Visualization and Analysis group the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and a research affiliate at the Seamless Astronomy group at Harvard University (USA). She is also the appointed chair of the ISPRS working group Geovisualization and Virtual Reality. Her interdisciplinary work covers topics related to Geographic information science (GIScience), visualization, vision (perception and cognition), eye tracking, virtual environments, and human-computer interaction.
