SUMMARY:Creative Methods and Spatial Storytelling as Cartographic Practice
DESCRIPTION:
Presentation by Dr. Meghan Kelly

Date: June 23, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Location: CGIS Knafel building, Room K354 (1737 Cambridge St., Cambridge, MA)

Abstract: Creative methods and spatial storytelling are essential elements of geographical knowledge production. Yet, these alternative approaches to geographical practice are less commonly engaged in cartography and GIScience, writ large. In this talk, I will introduce a framework for creative methods and will connect this framework to spatial storytelling through a series of examples. I will conclude arguing for creative methods and spatial storytelling in everyday mapping practice, research, and teaching.

Speaker bio: Dr. Meghan Kelly is an assistant professor and mapmaker currently at Syracuse University in the Department of Geography and the Environment, working at the intersection of cartography, feminist theory, and digital storytelling. Dr. Kelly is particularly interested in the role of power in spatial data, map design, and mapping processes. Recent projects include examining the ubiquity and use of satellite data in the news and our everyday lives through a Black feminist lens. Dr. Kelly aims to rethink and expand conventional cartographic tools and techniques through alternative perspectives.
