Armita Kar

Armita Kar is an Assistant Professor in Geography and Geoinformation Science and a core faculty member of the Center for Human-AI Innovation in Society (CHAIS) at George Mason University (GMU). Before her appointment at GMU, she served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). Dr. Kar completed her Ph.D. in Geography at The Ohio State University in 2023 and her Master's in Geography and GIS at the University of Utah in 2019.

Dr. Kar specializes in human mobility, spatial cognition, and environmental health. Her research leverages geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) to model and understand how spatial contexts and the human experiences within them shape travel behavior, accessibility, safety, and health outcomes across diverse population groups. In particular, her recent work focuses on developing automated toolsets for multimodal transportation environment auditing, human lived experiences monitoring, and physical and perceived accessibility measurements through agentic AI, vision-language models, network analytics, and citizen science.

Dr. Kar’s work has been published in several high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, Transportation Research Part D, Journal of Transport Geography, and Atmospheric Environment. Her research has been funded by 4-VA – Advancing the Commonwealth, NCH Abigail Wexner Research Institute, and the Sustainability Institute at The Ohio State University.

As a CGA Associate at Harvard University, she is a co-investigator on a project titled A Spatially Explicit and Reproducible Mobility-Aware Exposure Evaluation Platform (MEEP) for Climate-Vulnerable Cities, which integrates global mobility and environmental data to support more accurate exposure assessment and evidence-based built-environment interventions, particularly in the Global South
