Dr. O’Neill's research and teaching interests focus on the evolution of the Russian tsarist empire, particularly on the social, cultural, and spatial implications of imperial rule.  O’Neill promotes the study of Russia's spatial history in the classroom by creating (and making accessible) a range of geospatial historical maps, and databases which relate to demographics, cultural institutions, and economy.  An exemplary result is The Imperiia Project, an historical GIS of the tsarist state.  Dr. O’Neill has recently published the book Claiming Crimea: A History of Catherine the Great’s Southern Empire and is a member of the CGA Faculty Steering Committee.
